Forest department’s trick of using a cow elephant as a bait to trap the elusive tusker that was creating trouble for residents in Chikkamagaluru taluk has successfully worked. They rescued the tusker and wound up a week-long operation.
The tusker had destroyed the crops and created fear among villagers of Kamenahalli, Bendatti, Hiregowja, Mallenahalli, Inalli. More than 20 staff with trained elephants from Nagarahole and Sakrebilu camp were pressed into the operation to rescue the tusker but to no avail.
It was challenging as the tusker was disappearing immediately after sighting. During a drive, a forest staff was also injured following a misfire from an airgun. Forest department’s senior officers and villagers used to call this elephant Chatura (clever) after it started disappearing quickly.
Tamed elephants Bhima, Arjuna from Nagarahole and Sagar, Balanna from Sakrebilu camps that were part of the rescue team couldn’t trace the tusker but bringing in cow elephants clicked effectively.
Deputy conservator of forest (DCF) Kranti NE decided to use a female elephant to attract the wild tusker. They hired Bhanumati from Sakrebilu camp in Shivamogga and paraded it in the last sighted area at Beekanahalli and they were successful in capturing it.
DCF Kranthi said that after bringing in the female elephant late on Friday we could capture it immediately. Tusker reached the female’s place in the wee hours of Saturday and immediately it was captured and sent to Bandipur, he said.

ಕದ್ದು ಮುಚ್ಚಿ ಓಡಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ, ಕಂಡ ಕೂಡಲೇ ಮಾಯವಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಈ ಆನೆಗೆ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯರು ಹಾಗೂ ಅರಣ್ಯ ಇಲಾಖೆ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಚತುರ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಿಟ್ಟು ಹುಡುಕಲು ಶುರುವಿಟ್ಟರೂ ಆನೆ ಪತ್ತೆ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಕಾಮೇನಹಳ್ಳಿ, ಬೆಂಡಟ್ಟಿ, ಹಿರೇಗೌಜ, ಮಲ್ಲೇನಹಳ್ಳಿ, ಐನಳ್ಳಿ ಹೀಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಕಾದರೂ ಕ್ಷಣ ಮಾತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಮತ್ತೆ ಕಣ್ಮರೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಸಲಗ ಬೀಕನಹಳ್ಳಿ ಮುರಾರ್ಜಿ ಶಾಲೆ ಹಿಂಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೆರೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು.
ನಾಗರಹೊಳೆಯಿಂದ ಭೀಮ ಹಾಗೂ ಅರ್ಜುನ ಮತ್ತು ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗದಿಂದ ಬಾಲಣ್ಣ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಾಗರ್‌ ಆನೆಗಳನ್ನ ಕರೆತಂದು ಗಸ್ತು ಹೊಡೆದು ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಸುಸ್ತಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಕೊನೆಯ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನವಾಗಿ ಡಿಸಿಎಫ್‌ ಕ್ರಾಂತಿ ಸಕ್ರೆಬೈಲು ಬಿಡಾರದ ಹೆಣ್ಣಾನೆ ಭಾನುಮತಿಯನ್ನ ಕರೆಸಿ ಈ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರ್ನಾಲ್ಕು ಗಂಟೆ ಸುತ್ತಿಸಿದರು. ಇಲಾಖೆ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿಗೆ ಚಳ್ಳೆಹಣ್ಣು ತಿನ್ನಿಸಿ ಓಡಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಕಾಡಾನೆ, ಹೆಣ್ಣಾನೆ ಮೋಹಕ್ಕೆ ಧಾವಿಸಿತು. ಕೊನೆಗೂ ಸೆರೆಸಿಕ್ಕ ಚತುರನನ್ನ ಬಂಡಿಪುರಕ್ಕೆ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಗಡಿಪಾರು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ಭಾಗದ ಜನ ನೆಮ್ಮದಿಯ ನಿಟ್ಟುಸಿರು ಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
