Carrying Capacity Study Ordered for Western Ghats Amid Landslide Fears

Bengaluru, June 1: Following recent landslides in Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, and neighbouring regions prior to monsoon arrival, Forest & Environment Minister Eshwar B. Khandre has instructed officials to assess the Western Ghats’ carrying capacity and provide a detailed report.

The Minister has sent written instructions to the Additional Chief Secretary, noting that ongoing infrastructure projects in the Western Ghats pose significant risks. Subject matter specialists have voiced their apprehensions regarding potential casualties, damage to assets and agricultural produce, alongside threats to local wildlife populations.

According to Khandre, specialists have cautioned about possible severe water shortages if Western Ghats degradation persists. He has tasked the Biodiversity Board’s Member Secretary, along with Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) from both Evaluation, Planning, Research, and Training division and Forest Conservation division to complete their assessment within three months.

The Western Ghats, recognised as a biodiversity-rich area, encompasses 60% of Karnataka’s forests and supports numerous species of flora, fauna, and insects. Khandre stressed the Western Ghats’ vital function in capturing monsoon winds and facilitating rainfall, underlining the necessity for its conservation.
