Anil kumble appointed as forest and wildlife ambassador by karnataka government

In a significant development, former cricketer and esteemed sports personality Anil Kumble was appointed as the Forest and Wildlife Ambassador by the Karnataka govt. Forest, Ecology, and Environment Minister Eshwar B Khandre made the announcement at a press conference held at Vidhana Soudha. Khandre highlighted Kumble’s vast experience as the Deputy Chairman of the Karnataka Wildlife Board and his global reputation, which would be instrumental in raising awareness about forest conservation, afforestation, and wildlife protection.

**Kumble’s Role Comes Without Remuneration**

Khandre clarified that Kumble graciously accepted the role without any remuneration, driven by his passion for wildlife and forests. This appointment underscores the govt’s commitment to leveraging influential personalities to promote environmental causes.

**New Park Development in Bengaluru**

The minister unveiled plans to develop a sprawling park on 153 acres of land in Madappanahalli, near Yelahanka, aimed at creating more green spaces in Bengaluru. This initiative will significantly enhance the city’s park landscape, complementing iconic spaces like Lalbagh and Cubbon Park.

**Forest Conservation Initiatives**

Khandre highlighted the govt’s concerted efforts in forest conservation, including the organization of 8,848 Vanamahotsavas, plantation of 8.5 crore saplings, and development of 25 new tree gardens and 35 “Devara Kadu” (sacred forests). Additionally, over 3.70 crore saplings were distributed to farmers for planting on their lands, promoting community involvement in afforestation.

**Eviction of Encroachments**

The minister reported that 128 acres of forest land valued at Rs 4,000 crore were cleared of encroachments in Bengaluru over the past two years. Efforts are underway to reclaim 444 acres of forest land from HMT and other entities, demonstrating the govt’s resolve to protect forest land.

**Protection of Hesarghatta Grasslands**

Khandre announced the declaration of 5,678 acres of land around Hesarghatta Lake as a protected grassland, fulfilling a long-standing demand. This move is expected to preserve the region’s biodiversity and ecological balance.

**Other Key Initiatives**

The minister highlighted several other initiatives, including:

– Eviction of 6,251.31 acres of forest land from encroachments

– Launch of leopard safaris in Bannerghatta National Park to promote eco-tourism

– Formation of a committee to resolve issues related to “deemed forests”

– Measures to mitigate human-wildlife conflict, including an international conference on human-elephant conflict

– Development of a railway barrier to prevent elephant movement into human settlements

– Planting of bamboo and agave along forest boundaries to create a bio-barrier

**Staff Recruitment and Welfare**

Khandre emphasized the crucial role of staff in forest conservation and wildlife protection. Recruitment processes are currently underway for 310 forest watchers and 540 forest guards, underscoring the govt’s commitment to strengthening forest management.

**Voluntary Relocation of Forest Dwellers**

The minister mentioned the voluntary relocation of 27 families from the Bhimgad forest area in Belagavi district, with each family receiving Rs 15 lakh as compensation. This initiative aims to reduce human-wildlife conflict while ensuring the well-being of forest dwellers.

**Ecotourism and Online Booking**

The govt is actively promoting ecotourism, and online booking facilities have been introduced for all trekking trails in the state. Furthermore, an online FIR system, “Garudakshi,” was launched to curb forest crimes and enhance forest protection.
