The population of grey wolves at Bankapura wolf sanctuary in Koppal district has increased with the arrival of five new cubs. The sanctuary now houses approximately 40-45 Indian grey wolves.
Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar B Khandre highlighted that the Forest Department maintains vigilant protection of the 332-hectare sanctuary situated in the Gangavati wildlife range.
The sanctuary provides a habitat for diverse wildlife, including leopards, peacocks, wild boars, foxes and rabbits. The department implements strict anti-poaching measures to safeguard these animals.
The minister attributed the recent birth of wolf cubs to the department’s successful conservation efforts. He urged the public to maintain distance from the newborn cubs and their mothers.
The department has positioned CCTV cameras near the wolf dens to observe their movements. The natural landscape of caves and hillocks within the sanctuary creates suitable conditions for the wolves.
“Last month, a wolf had given birth to eight cubs in the same sanctuary.”
