Sagar, Karnataka: The indefinite protest by farmers, displaced by the Linganamakki Dam’s construction across the Sharavathi River has entered its second day at the Sagar Sub-Divisional Office premises.
Farmer leader Dinesh Shiraval warned that if the government fails to respond, the farmers will take drastic action and breach the dam to reclaim their submerged land, which has been underwater for decades.
“The protest will continue on Wednesday, followed by a march to the Linganamakki reservoir on Thursday,” Shiraval announced.
He expressed disappointment over District Minister Madhu Bangarappa’s and Sagar MLA Gopalakrishna Belur’s absence from the protest site, emphasizing the farmers’ decades-long struggle for land rights.
About Linganamakki Dam
The Linganamakki Dam is a gravity dam built across Karnataka’s Sharavathi River. Constructed in 1964, it spans 2.74 kilometers and has an effective storage capacity of 4.29 cubic kilometers. The dam supports hydroelectric power generation, supplying water to the 1,728 MW Sharavathi Power Station. Additionally, it provides irrigation and drinking water to surrounding regions. However, its construction has led to displacement and land acquisition issues, sparking ongoing protests from affected farmers.
