Shivamogga, Karnataka – A herd of elephants has brought terror to Purudal village, destroying crops and livelihoods in their wake. The latest attacks, which occurred on Monday and Tuesday, have left villagers outraged and demanding action from the Forest Department.
*Crop Destruction and Fear Grip Villagers*
The elephants, roaming between Bhadra and Shettyhalli reserve forests, targeted fields outside the wildlife boundary, damaging crops belonging to Rajesh and Beerappa. Areca and coconut trees, as well as maize crops, were destroyed, leaving villagers struggling to make ends meet.
*Villagers Speak Out*
“We’re living in fear due to the frequent attacks,” said Krishnappa, a Purudal resident. “The Forest Department must take immediate measures to stop the elephant menace.”
Prashant Puradal, a young farmer, added, “Our homes are surrounded by fields, making them vulnerable to elephant attacks. We’re terrified after recent incidents and have stopped traveling to milk dairies in the evening.”

Wildlife Division DCF Prasanna Krishna Patgar confirmed the elephant sightings and assured that relocation efforts to Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary are underway. “We’ll assess crop damage and take necessary action.”

Puradalu village, just 9 km from Shivamogga district center, has endured repeated elephant attacks. The herd’s movements between Bhadra and Shettyhalli wildlife sanctuaries have created a crisis, with locals demanding prompt measures to mitigate the human-wildlife conflict.
