The Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS) in Karnataka is facing allegations of wildlife exploitation, specifically involving the illegal detention of king cobras and their hatchlings for commercial purposes. The station was established in 2005 by herpetologist Romulus Whitaker to study and conserve the king cobra species.

The allegations against ARRS include holding king cobras and their hatchlings without proper authorization, allowing professional wildlife photographers to take photos and videos of the king cobras for a fee, building tourist cottages within the forest area without permission, and failing to inform forest department authorities about the capture and detention of king cobras.

Environmentalists are demanding registration of cases, seizure of evidence, and action against those involved. Local activist Nagaraj Koove criticized the role of NGOs in the Malnad region and suggested eliminating commercial interests. Wildlife conservationist Nitin Herale emphasized the need for strict enforcement of wildlife conservation laws and suggested that Forest Minister Eshwar B Khandre obtain details of organizations operating in the area. Activist Dinesh Kallahalli requested immediate action.

In response, Ajay Giri, ARRS teacher and herpetologist, denied the captivity allegations, stating that the photos are old and the center operates according to rules.

Chief Conservator of Forest Shivamogga, KT Hanumanthappa said that a team of officers visited the center to investigate the environmentalists’ claims and are awaiting further details.
