Environmental activists in Shivamogga are strongly opposing the planned removal of 1249 trees along a 36-kilometer stretch of the Shivamogga-Thirthahalli national highway (NH 169). The project, situated within the Shettihalli reserve forest, has sparked widespread concern among local residents and environmental groups.
Alleged Regulatory Violations
Environmental advocates claim that the Forest Department and the National Highways Department have bypassed essential protocols and regulations. They assert that the necessary State Wildlife Board approval and Wildlife Clearance were not obtained before initiating construction.
Public Consultation and Objections
A public consultation was held on February 27 at the Bejjavalli Grama Panchayat hall, where over 600 objections were raised by local residents and activists. Thirthahalli MLA Araga Jnanendra, DCF Shivashankar, and forest officials presided over the meeting.
Environmental Concerns and Demands
Environmental groups, including Green lives TRUST, are demanding an official investigation into the alleged regulatory violations. They are also requesting that authorities conduct Forest Clearance procedures and Public Hearing outside forest territory. The groups are convinced that the project will harm the ecology and wildlife of the region.
Next Steps
The meeting concluded without a decision, and the fate of the project remains uncertain. However, environmental groups are determined to continue their opposition to the project, citing its potential environmental impacts.
